History

Immaculate Conception was first envisioned in early 1952 as a mission church for Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Seguin, TX. Construction began in 1953 with labor provided by many local residents including members of the Schulz, Scheel, Huebinger, Suarez, Mendez, Campos, De La Cruz, Ramirez and Martinez families. The church was dedicated on May 30, 1954 by Rt. Rev. Monsignor James T. Lockwood, representing Archbishop Robert E. Lucey at a Mass held at 9:00 AM. The church had an average attendance of between 160-180 people and about 60 families. Fr. Aloys M. Hepp, MSF (pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Seguin) and initiator of the request to construct the church in Marion was its first pastor. Administration of Immaculate Conception passed from Our Lady of Guadalupe to St. James in Seguin, then, on Christmas Day, 1970, the Church of the Good Shepherd was established in Schertz with Immaculate Conception as its mission. Pastors included Fr. Sean Moore, Fr. Emmett Carolan, Msgr. Robert Silverman (with parochial vicar Fr. Albert Maneth), Msgr. Michael O’Gorman, Msgr. Roger Robbins, Fr. Greg Nevlud, Fr. Ed Pavlicek and the current pastor, Fr. Octavio Muguerza who was appointed on July 1, 2018. Currently, Immaculate Conception serves approximately 160 families and is a very important part of the Marion community.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is an international Catholic organization of lay people, founded in 1833. The society is under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul and derives its inspiration from its members, to help those who are in need, to relieve suffering and to provide a Christian outreach to our neighbors. Services include visiting the poor in their homes, providing food from the church food pantry, and assistance with emergency partial payments of utility, rent and medical expenses. We are mainly dependent upon the support of our fellow parishioners.
